Poblenou Community Compost

This is a project Rei worked on as a master’s student. Together with local residents, she created a compost in a super-local community garden in the Poblenou district of Barcelona.

As an extension of her undergraduate project, she explored urban design using composting.

In particular, she approached a community garden near a school and collaborated with local people to create a compost.

Other projects included composting workshops with children and her classmates, interviews with composting experts in Barcelona, the creation of composting bags using biomaterials to carry food waste from the house to the community garden, experiments with 3D printing of waste bread collected from local restaurants, and the development of an automatic device that automatically measures the temperature of compost using sensors and transmits the information to a smartphone.

Through various contemplations and prototypes related to composting and circulation, she hopes to continue to implement how such initiatives can be developed in the urban areas.
